Modelling fracture formation in bi-layered materials, with applications to tree bark and drying mud

چکیده
In this paper we present a model of fracture formation on surfaces of bi-layered materials. The model allows synthesis of realistic patterns occurring in nature as a result of cracking induced by growth or shrinkage of one layer with respect to another. Two different discretizations of the problem are discussed. First we revisit an existing mass-spring approach, then we introduce an approach based on a finite element method. We apply the FEM model to synthesize crack patterns occurring in tree bark and drying mud, and present results.

Simulating energy method for grout-induced crack analysis of rock structures at Chadormalu mine by extended finite element method
Fracture mechanics is a vital component involved in studying the exact behavior of rock materials. Detection and assessment of the behavior of rock joints injected by grout plays an important role in numerical modelling in rock mechanic projects. The importance of mechanisms associated with initiation and propagation of cracks due to hydraulic fracturing has led to a considerable interest in in...

In this paper, an exact analytical solution for free vibration of rotating bi-layered cylindrical shell composed of two independent functionally graded layers was presented. The thicknesses of the shell layers were assumed to be equal and constant. The material properties of the constituents of bi-layered FGM cylindrical shell were graded in the thickness direction of the layers of the shell ac...
متن کاملFinite element comparison of single, bi-layered and three-layered tube hydroforming processes
In this paper, single, bi-layered and three-layered tube hydroforming processes were numerically simulated using the finite element method. It was found that the final bulges heights resulted from the models were in good agreement with the experimental results. Three types of modeling were kept with the same geometry, tube material and process parameters to be compared between the obtained hydr...
متن کاملReport Number 10/44 Mud peeling and horizontal crack formation in drying clays by
Mud peeling is a common phenomenon whereby horizontal cracks propagate parallel to the surface of a drying clay. Differential stresses then cause the layer of clay above the crack to curl up to form a mud peel. By treating the clay as a poroelastic solid, we analyse the peeling phenomenon and show that it is caused by the gradient in tensile stress at the surface of the clay, analogously to the...
متن کاملSystematic fractures analysis using image logs and complementary methods in the Marun Oilfield, SW Iran
Fractures are considered as one of the important structures in fractured reservoirs due to their effect on fluid currents and reservoirparameters such as porosity and permeability. Fracture parameters can only be directly calculated with core and image logs. Cores haveserious limitations, so image logs are the best method. The aim of this study is the systematic fractures analysis of the Asmari...
